Role Overview
Position: Tax Adviser
Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Reports To: Manager / Director / Partner
Salary: Competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience
Key Responsibilities
- Advising Malaysian and international clients on local and cross-border tax matters, including inbound and outbound investment structuring into and from Malaysia
- Providing tax advisory services on a broad range of transactions including mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, real estate transactions, and financing arrangements
- Advising on Malaysian corporate income tax, withholding tax, transfer pricing, goods and services tax (GST/SST), and stamp duty matters
- Supporting senior team members on complex multi-jurisdictional tax planning and structuring assignments
- Preparing and reviewing tax opinions, memoranda, and client reports to a high standard of technical accuracy and commercial clarity
- Liaising with the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN), the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, and other relevant authorities as required
- Building and maintaining strong client relationships, and contributing to business development initiatives including seminars, publications, and client briefings
- Collaborating with DFDL’s regional offices on cross-border and multi-jurisdictional tax matters
Key Relationships
External: Clients, prospective clients, government ministries and tax authorities, chambers of commerce, and industry associations
Internal: Partners, Directors, Managers, and colleagues across DFDL’s regional network
Candidate Profile
Essential:
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant tax advisory experience, gained in a law firm, Big Four accounting firm, or specialist tax advisory practice
- Strong technical knowledge of Malaysian tax law, including corporate income tax, withholding tax, and transfer pricing
- Demonstrated experience advising Malaysian and/or international clients on tax matters
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide clear and commercially focused advice
- Effective time management and task prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously
Preferred:
- Experience in international tax planning and cross-border transaction structuring
- Familiarity with ASEAN regional tax issues and the tax frameworks of neighboring jurisdictions
- Membership of a recognized Bar Association, a Professional Accounting Body (e.g., MIA, ACCA, CPA), or holding a relevant professional tax qualification (e.g., CTIM, ATII)
- Experience working with foreign direct investment into Malaysia and the relevant tax incentive frameworks (e.g., MIDA, ERL, PIA)
